More than a café. A cooperative.
Café Fénix opened in 2018 as a project of Centro San Bonifacio, run by Cooperativa Fénix, a women's co-op in Avondale. The idea was simple. Build a space where women could lead a business together, where neighbors could meet over good coffee, and where every dollar spent helps fund local programs.
The walls are painted by community artists. The chairs are mismatched on purpose. The menu pulls from both sides of the kitchen, American breakfast sandwiches next to tamales and aguas frescas. Everything you order, eat, or take home from the boutique loops back into the work.
What a hidden gem. The food is great, the coffee is delish, the prices are great, and it has such a friendly atmosphere. It is also part of a community center that offers free classes for the neighborhood.
